Team WISHH raise over £6,500 to support Hull Hospitals & New NICU ‘Space to Grow’ Appeal

Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust doctors, nurses, and other NHS staff donned their trainers to support the WISHH Charity when they took part in the Hull Run for All last month raising an incredible £6,562.41!

The fantastic team of forty runners featured hospital staff working in departments such as Accident and Emergency, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Theatres, Endoscopy, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Ear Nose and Throat, Urology, Oncology, Histopathology, Paediatrics, Estates, and Administration. The runners from across Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital all came together to help the WISHH Charity make our hospitals a better place for patients, visitors and staff.

The team were also joined by friends of the WISHH Charity, including local business supporters Prestige Recruitment, Helix and Siemens Gamesa, who all came on board to help make a difference.

A number of runners chose to back our new ‘Space to Grow Appeal’, providing £4,800 to support the Neonatal intensive Care Unit (NICU), as WISHH embark on raising £100,000 to enhance facilities. Funds raised will enable WISHH to create a sensory room, family ‘Haven’, siblings play area and a specialist learning facility within the Unit.

Dr Jane Lawson ran the Half Marathon and said, “As a member of staff in the Neonatal Unit I know how important the ‘Space to Grow’ appeal is. Our wonderful families will benefit so much from these new facilities”.

Harley Smith said, “My wife and I recently had our first baby who spent two weeks in NICU, followed by six weeks of care from the NICU outreach team. The standard of care Hugo received was remarkable and this is our way to give a little back.”

Michael Pearl, said “As a student nurse who is currently on placement at NICU, a few months ago my nephew Albi was born unexpectedly and spent time on the Unit. I have seen the amazing work that happens there and am proud to support the appeal by taking part in the Hull 10k.”

Anna and James Bell took part in both the Hull Half Marathon and will take part in the North Yorkshire Half Marathon in October. Anna said, “We welcomed our son Arthur into the world at just 30 weeks. Following his shock birth, we spent 7 weeks in NICU and the care received was amazing. We want to help support NICU with this new appeal.”

Runners also supported wards and departments across Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital, including Neurology to support Motor Neurone service, and Queen’s Centre for Oncology and Haematology raising £1,700.

Lisa Whitton, WISHH Charity Manger said, “I would like to say a heartfelt thank you everyone who has supported our runners in the Hull Run for All event this year, helping us make a real difference to our hospitals providing additional equipment and supporting our new ‘Space to Grow’ appeal. To date the appeal has raised over £36,000 towards our target. The atmosphere on the day was fantastic and it was incredibly moving to hear our runners’ stories on their inspiration to support Hull Hospitals.”
